Once you have completed your resume and been called for an interview the nerves really kick in, don't they? You've gotten this far, don't blow the interview. I've compiled a list of interviewing tips from a human resource professional's perspective.

Looking for a new job is a difficult job in its own right. Everyone goes through it at some point in their life and more often than not, the average person will tell you that they have interviewed countless times. It really doesn't matter how often you interview, it never seems to get any easier, does it.

Well, I've compiled a list of tips that I hope you will find useful in your job hunting endeavors. You may need to practice and will likely have to go through it more than once on your journey to new employment so look at each interview as a learning experience and press onward.

  • BE PREPARED.Learn as much as you can about the position and the company to help you demonstrate why you’ll be an asset.
  • ORGANIZE YOUR THOUGHTS. Plan answers to possible questions (review your goals, needs, skills, etc.).
  • REASSURE YOURSELF.The interviewer wants to select someone who will benefit the company. Confidence in your abilities will convey the message that you can do that.
  • Dress to impress is the key… Always dress neatly and conservatively, keeping in mind the potential work environment. Think about your appearance (hair, posture, etc.).
  • EXPECT TO ENCOUNTER many questions and interviewers with different personalities and techniques.
  • SHOW INTEREST & ENTHUSIASM. Relate your interest in the company and the position.
  • RELAX - BE YOURSELF. Ask questions - find out as much as you can about the job.
  • BE POSITIVE ABOUT YOURSELF, the organization, former positions, etc. Don't complain about previous work experiences, including but not limited to management.
  • EXPRESS YOUR CONTINUED INTEREST in the position and your belief that you can handle it.
  • BE HONEST. This is important for both you and your potential manager. Don't exaggerate (or underestimate) your past experience.
  • MAKE POINTS POLITELY. Stress your best qualities and experience; note what you could bring to the position.
  • LISTEN CAREFULLY and answer questions completely. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know something.

You'd be surprised at just how many of these points interviewees lose out on. Everyone gets nervous and surely if you are in desperate need of a job, telling you to relax may seem easier said than done but the problem is that extreme nervousness can also convey to a potential employer that you do not feel confident in your abilities. Do your very best to relax and follow these pointers.
